Welcome the the wonderful world of Riding Steers. Not all our members ride steers, some have cows, drive oxen or simply love to hang out and learn about training cattle and the fun we have. The International Riding Steer Association is a global organization with members from around the world uniting to help educate, form clubs and just have fun with riding, or driving cattle. Some people wonder why anyone would want to ride a cow? The answer for us is easy. They physically can not rear, they are more prone to inspect something than spook from it. The buck can be bred out just as rodeo people have bred it in. The kick also can be bred out of them. Choosing a quality riding steer will bring 25+yrs of safe and quality riding time for those that want an easier riding alternative. Some people think cattle are slow, or don't have endurance. Just ask a cutting horse person how fast a steer can be. If conditioned like a horse for endurance, it is also possible with a bovine. They jump, run, and trail ride just like any other riding animal. With one exception, they get allot more attention. The cost of keeping a riding steer or riding cow is also considerably cheaper. See the cost difference here. It is aprox. 700.00 a year cheaper to own a riding steer or riding cow than it is to own a horse. This estimate is with out boarding fees. Cattle also can be boarded cheaper with a local farmer than a horse can. Local farmers don't want horses with their cattle, thus some horse owners pay 500.00 and up for horse board, while cattle boarding is about 100. a month if you have to pay for it. Breeding a horse can cost 800.00 and up for semen, while cattle semen from proven riding producers are still very reasonable at less than 50.00 per straw for some. The list goes on. No Coggins tests, no West Nile, no shoeing bill and all the fun with twice the attention and safety. These are just a few reasons we love to ride our cattle.
